At Wilderness we place value on the global perspectives our international students bring to our community and respect the tremendous challenge the girls have embraced by choosing to study in their second language.

Wilderness Boarding House welcomes students from all cultural backgrounds and values the contribution each girl makes to ensure all our girls develop and appreciate cultural perspectives and become respectful global citizens. We have international students who have chosen to complete their study in Australia and also welcome students who wish to study for just 6 months or a year.

The city of Adelaide is one of the world's safest and most liveable cities. Wilderness School is located just ten minutes from the centre of the city. Located on the school grounds, the Boarding House provides a friendly, safe residence for both local and international students.

The Boarding House provides an exceptional standard of accommodation with newly refurbished bedrooms and bathrooms, spacious, modern indoor and outdoor recreation spaces and access to the latest technology. Keen to make our international girls feel at home, the Boarding House chefs enjoy preparing traditional style foods. The chefs encourage the international students to be involved in planning the menu and many of the international girls take pleasure in sharing their local recipes and helping in the preparation of some meals.

The Boarding House staff and local boarders are encouraged to learn about, respect and share the cultural backgrounds of our international students and we encourage our international students to visit Australian families and local attractions during exeats and holidays.

We appreciate the huge adjustment required to live and learn in a new country and the importance of our Boarding House having a true sense of home for our international girls. The Boarding House offers accommodation to international students over exeat periods so the girls do not feel pressured to find alternative accommodation throughout term time.

Intensive English course

On arrival in Australia some international students may benefit from a short course of Intensive English. This is negotiated on an individual needs basis. The Intensive English is offered in conjunction with international students enrolled at Prince Alfred College. The program combines intensive English instruction with some support classes at the Wilderness campus. Once competency in English has improved, generally after a term or semester, girls enter all mainstream classes at Wilderness and continue to be supported with their English by our English as a Second Language teacher.

International students enrolling at Wilderness who have a high proficiency in English enter mainstream classes on arrival and will have support from an ESL support teacher.

I am Canace Nam, the International Representative in SRC. This is a new position established in 2015. The aim of the new branch of the SRC is to provide support for international students and foster cultural understanding through organizing different fun activities. For example, we have introduced 'International Week' which was held in Week 4 of Term 1 this year. It was an extremely successful event, which reflected the aims of the international committee.

I am from Hong Kong, an international financial centre, which gives me lots of opportunities to experience different Asian cultures through friends from different Asian countries. Also, as my parents are accountants and they need to travel a lot for their work. I have also traveled to different countries such as England. This has given me an opportunity to understand more about the western world.

I have been in Australia for 2 years and have experienced lots of Australian culture, such as tasting vegemite. Although, I didn’t enjoy it when I first tried it, I still think Australia is an adorable country!

Overall, I feel grateful that I can study at Wilderness School and am proud to be an International Representative. In the future, I hope everyone will enjoy events organized by International Committee.
