Culture of Philanthropy

Philanthropy is a very important part of the history and culture of Wilderness School. The school's founders, the Brown sisters, always encouraged students and their families to give back to the community – a proud tradition that continues today. In 1985, the Wilderness School Foundation was founded. Its purpose is to help bridge the gap between school fees and the cost of a Wilderness education. Since its inception, the Wilderness School Foundation has been instrumental in helping to fund many of the important capital works projects that have transformed not only the landscape of Wilderness, but the lives of our students.

With the help of our very generous donors, recent contributions from the Foundation to the School include the following:

  • $875,000 towards the Newman Theatre
  • $300,000 towards the Flexible Learning Spaces
  • $50,000 towards the P&F Terrace
  • $535,000 towards the Brown's House
  • $2.3 million towards the Michell Music Centre
  • $660,000 towards the Wildy Café and Boarding House upgrade
  • $1.1 million towards the Gymnasium/Hall
  • $1.9 million towards the Science and Humanities Building

Giving to Wilderness

Generosity is born from different motivations – whether it’s to remain involved with their community, acknowledge their own fortunate position, honour their family, support girls’ education, facilitate new ideas, do something in their lifetime, or simply to make a difference.

Scholarship Fund

The Foundation launched the Wilderness School Scholarship Fund in 2011. Since its inception, we continue to receive philanthropic  gifts from our School Community which are invested into a perpetual endowed fund. In 2017, we launched the Brown Sisters’ Memorial Entrance Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an academically talented girls from outside our school, whose family could otherwise not afford to send her. The first recipient will begin at Wilderness School in 2020.

You will also receive invitations to special events and activities through the year.

A bequest can support an area you are passionate about, such as the sciences or the arts or a sport, or be for general use. A bequest allows you to contribute to our school without impacting your lifestyle today and it can be modified at any time in response to your change in circumstances.
