A remarkable bequest from Old Scholar, Diana Crawford (class of 1963), enabled Wilderness School to purchase a second campus on The Coorong. In memory and recognition of Diana and this generous legacy the facility is named "Crawford".
In close proximity to the magnificent sand dunes of the Young Husband Peninsula and home to a vast wetland ecosystem, the property boasts a unique location and offers enormous opportunities for outdoor, environmental and experiential education. This beautiful campus gives us unique and dynamic learning experiences that reach beyond the physical confines of the classroom. This Campus also acts as a retreat for our staff and student community to practise creativity, reflection and collaboration in a breathtaking natural landscape. At Crawford, our girls are supported to become capable, confident and connected young women who are resilient and resourceful.
Wilderness relies on continued philanthropy to provide the best possible facilities for our girls. We are forever indebted to the families who kindly donated funds to Crawford allowing a complete refurbishment of the cabins for the students and staff to utilise. The magnificent cabins are now modern and functional spaces.
Our Crawford Store is a great example of ethical and sustainable shopping. Throughout the REALISE program the girls use reusable containers to purchase their staple foods that have been locally sourced.
The unique natural environment at Crawford provides enriched learning experiences for our girls. Learning to take ecological responsibility through engaging in our long-standing commitment to bird banding research, together with the University of Adelaide our girls become Custodians of Crawford. While here, they immerse themselves in the landscape to create original pieces of visual art and literature.
Our industrial kitchen allows our students to foster independence by the girls being involved in all aspects of camp life including preparing food for their peers. It is a space of sharing delicious meals and sharing stories about the adventurous days on camp.
At the start of REALISE a professional chef upskills our girls on all thing's food safety, nutrition and cooking skills to prepare them to tackle their own menu planning and cooking in their cabins for the remainder of the program.
