At Wilderness we value the global perspectives our international students bring to our community and respect the tremendous challenge the girls have embraced by choosing to study in a different cultural setting and in their second language.
Since its establishment in 1884, Wilderness School has been at the forefront of girls’ education. Consistently ranking among the top of Australian Schools for academic achievement, we offer a comprehensive and balanced curriculum with a broad and diverse range of subjects that places an emphasis on students becoming independent and life-long learners, as well as critical and compassionate thinkers.
We have welcomed international girls from all cultural backgrounds to Wilderness School for 15 years. Having worked with girls of all ages, we are experienced in and dedicated to understanding and meeting their differing needs.
From her first day at school your daughter will be in an environment where she is valued for what she can offer as a person. She will know that achievement and leadership by women are natural and to be expected. She will discover her gifts, find inner balance and make true friends.
Guided by our School Values, a Wilderness education will cultivate in her a love of learning, the habits of an intellectual life and the character, integrity and qualities of a leader so that she can advance in a rapidly changing global landscape.
We have international students who have chosen to spend just six months with us and those who wish to complete all of their secondary school education in Australia. No matter how long a girl studies at Wilderness, every girl knows that she is an important part of our ‘family’ and will be forever a Wilderness girl.
Enrolment Information
International students are invited to enrol at Wilderness directly through our Academic Registrar, or the approved service of an International Agent.
If you would like to apply directly for your daughter, we suggest completing the International Student Application Form two years prior to your daughter’s intended commencement.
Please note the following documents will be required as part of your daughter’s application:
- Current School Report
- English Assessment
- Passport details
For a detailed breakdown of our International Fees for students studying in Australia on full fee-paying visas, including sub class 500, please click here.
A requirement of your daughter’s visa is that she is appointed a guardian. In the absence of you being able to appoint someone to this role, Wilderness School will agree to be the appointed guardian. This applies to either homestay or boarding students.
Why study in Australia
South Australia is a premium destination for education.
Recognised as one of the world’s safest and most liveable cities, Adelaide offers our international students the opportunity to study in an affordable, vibrant and leading city for education in Australia.
Located in Medindie, an inner northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia and just 10 minutes from the Adelaide city centre, Wilderness School is Adelaide’s oldest Independent Girls’ School.
The Wilderness School campus is in close proximity to local shopping precincts. It is located just 15 minutes from the Adelaide International Airport.
Accommodation
There are two accommodation options available to International students studying at Wilderness.
Boarding House
Wilderness Boarding House welcomes students from all cultural backgrounds and values the contribution each girl makes to ensure that all of our girls develop and appreciate cultural perspectives and become respectful global citizens.
Located on the School grounds, the Boarding House offers a friendly, safe residence for both local and international students. It provides quality, homely accommodation with comfortable bedrooms, indoor and outdoor recreation spaces and access to the latest technology.
We appreciate the huge adjustment required to live and learn in a new country and the importance of our Boarding House in providing a true sense of home for our international girls.
Our Boarding House staff and local boarders are encouraged to learn about, respect and share the cultural backgrounds of our international students. Our Boarding House chefs enjoy preparing traditional style menus which have been designed by our international students. Many of the girls take pleasure in sharing their local recipes and planning events for their special cultural celebrations.
During exeats and holidays, we encourage our international students to visit Australian families and local attractions where they can learn more about the local culture and immerse themselves further into the community.
Homestay
Wilderness works closely with Happy Homestay, a professional agency which matches the needs of each student with a local family. We ensure our homestay families provide a high quality of care and insurance cover for our students.
While Wilderness School prefers international students to be part of the boarding community, places can be limited. When this is the case, homestay accommodation is arranged.
Student Services
Wilderness understands the special needs of students living away from home.
Our international students are provided with a range of support services to assist with their transition and to help them throughout their learning journey.
A pre-departure orientation list is provided to all girls on their enrolment at Wilderness.
On arrival, our international students are greeted by a representative of the School and given a thorough induction, introducing them to the Australian culture and the School environment. The induction can continue over a number of weeks for girls who join our 'Intensive English for Academic Purposes' course.
All international students have access to ongoing support for the duration of their studies. Our international Student Coordinator and English as an Additional Language teachers offer a Homework Club as well as academic and wellbeing support. They also provide regular translated communication to our international families.
We have a full-time registered nurse on duty throughout the school day to provide medical services if required. The boarding staff provide international boarders with assistance for any medical related issues. Our homestay students’ medical concerns are cared for by their individual families.
During school hours all students are supported by our School Psychologist and Student Counsellor for any general wellbeing needs.
Wilderness also has an extensive and global alumni base which provides exceptional opportunities for our graduates’ future business networks.
Intensive English Course
On arrival in Australia some international students may benefit from a short course of Intensive English.
Negotiated on an individual needs basis, the Intensive English Course is offered in conjunction with international students enrolled at Prince Alfred College. The program combines intensive English instruction with some transition classes at Wilderness School.
Once competency in English has improved, generally after a term or semester, girls will enter all mainstream classes at Wilderness and continue to be supported with their English by our English as an Additional Language teacher and International Student Coordinator.
International students enrolling at Wilderness who have a high proficiency in English can enter directly into mainstream classes on arrival and if needed, will be able to access assistance from an EAL support teacher.
International Agents
International families are invited to use the services of the following approved International Agents.
Some international families prefer to use an agent who speaks their own language. Agents can make the process fast and efficient as they are familiar with the processes in place at Wilderness School.
