Welcome to Year 11
Selecting courses for Year 11 is an exciting but sometimes daunting task. This decision is made easier by considering personal strengths and areas of considerable interest and enjoyment. Consideration needs to be given to Stage 1 and 2 courses that may be required for Year 12.
What we know is that the world of work has changed exponentially over the last few years. There are so many new opportunities for young women to pursue their interests and talents.
My experience as Head of Senior School highlights that the most successful South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) course patterns are where young people follow their passions, interests and strengths. At Wilderness, girls in Year 11 have access to a broad range of choices to enable them to make sure that the pathways they pursue are flexible and are open to change. Young people will change their mind but at the same time we want all girls to achieve the highest level of academic success possible. Their final ATAR is their opportunity to have choice—that is its purpose. We want to make sure that through their ATAR, every girl has access to the broadest range of university entry choices and other opportunities when they leave school.
This year, all girls in Year 11 will have the opportunity to meet with a wide range of teachers who are SACE course specialists to assist them with their course choices. Naturally, both Mrs Caroline Palmer, Careers Counsellor, and I will always be available should you wish to meet with us to discuss course selection more deeply.
What I would encourage all girls and their parents to do is to think outside the square and to understand that what we are doing is ‘educating our girls for their future and not our past’ as the world of work is changing. As parents, we must be open to the fact that girls need to choose a broader range of courses to ensure that they are prepared to do their best and to be successful in their personal and professional lives.
Should you have any questions regarding the course selection process, please email me.

Year 11 Students and Stage 2 Courses
All Year 11 students will undertake Activating Identities and Futures (Stage 2) which replaces the Research Project. Girls will also be able to undertake another Stage 2 course.
SACE Stage 2 courses are designed for completion after Stage 1 courses at Year 11 to provide an appropriate foundation for higher-level studies at Year 12. The academic load of a Stage 2 course is significant and girls and their parents must carefully consider if they can manage this load in Year 11, particularly in Terms 3 and 4, without it having an adverse impact on their personal health and wellbeing.
Wilderness School acknowledges that some girls in Year 11 may wish to study SACE Stage 2 courses not offered at Wilderness with external providers and/or a Vocational Education Certificate III Course. This is in addition to the courses they undertake at Wilderness. Girls choosing this option are strongly encouraged to discuss their interest with the Head of Senior School prior to enrolling in an external course.
Any girl who undertakes Stage 2 studies with external providers must understand that Wilderness staff will not be in a position to provide any academic support for these studies due to a conflict of interest. The external school’s assessment plan will be different from the one prepared by the Wilderness staff and approved by the SACE Board. Teachers will also not grant extensions on school-based tasks because of these external studies.
In summary, Wilderness staff cannot support any Year 11 girl undertaking SACE Stage 2 studies externally. Girls choosing to pursue Stage 2 studies externally are encouraged to discuss this with the Head of Senior School prior to enrolment.
