Wonderful Wilderness Music at Generations In Jazz 2024!
The first weekend of Term 2 saw 46 girls and 5 staff members travel down to Mount Gambier for the annual Generations in Jazz competition. Over the weekend, our Big Bands 1 and 2, Jazz Choir, Jazz Incorporated, and Jazz Combo performed their chosen repertoire after months of preparation and enjoyed a plethora of performances from other schools and professional musicians, with the highlights proving to be Kate Ceberano, Budjerah, and the Generations in Jazz Big Band (which featured our own BB1 director and current parent, Mr Tom Pulford!).
The girls from Wilderness came home with outstanding results!
Big Band 1 (Director Mr T Pulford) 8th
in Division 3 (out of 20 bands)
Big Band 2 (Director Mr D Hurn) 7th
in Division 4 (out of 24 bands)
Jazz Combo (Director Ms A Lenartowicz) 6th in Small Jazz Combo section (out of 17 combos)
Jazz Incorporated (Director Ms J Tropeano) 1st in Division 2 Large (out of 34 choirs)
Jazz Choir (Director Ms J Tropeano) 1st in Division 1 Large (out of 8 choirs)
Jazz Choir took home the big win with a score of 99.5/100 in the Division 1 vocal awards, also winning the opportunity to perform their choice piece, an arrangement of One Note Samba buy our own Jo Tropeano and Dave Goodwin. This performance took place on the main stage in front of thousands of students, teachers, and professional musicians. And if that were not enough, the Soprano section was awarded best soprano section in the whole division and also had the opportunity to perform a brand new tune with the first ever ‘super-choir’! Congratulations to Amaia Thomas, Mackenzie Wilkes, Jemimah Satchell, and Amelie-Rose Kemp.
Additionally in the Stage Band Awards, Rose Barrett (Year 11) and Selin Cinar (Year 8) earned a place in the Division 3 and 4 Super Bands respectively, a very hard-earned position at GIJ!
We are so proud of the girl’s efforts, through countless extra rehearsals, cramped living spaces, and long bus rides, while showcasing significant growth as musicians, both individually and within their ensembles.
Well done to all!
Upcoming Music Events- Term 2

Moods of the Season
The 2024 Chamber Concert is being done a little differently this year. Combining with the Prince Alfred College Senior Orchestra, the Wilderness Senior Orchestra under the direction of Mr Joseph Freer will play this coming Sunday at the Ukaria Cultural Centre (119 Williams Rd Mt Barker). This spectacular venue offers the most incredible acoustics for strings, and with an bar and beautiful scenery and views – this short afternoon concert is bound to be a delight.
