Tertiary Information Evening

On Tuesday 2 August, Wilderness School was joined by St Peter's College and Pembroke School for a combined Tertiary information night. This was a wonderful opportunity for Year 12 students and their parents from across all three schools to discuss and ask questions regarding their future study plans with university representatives. The University of Adelaide, TAFE, The University of Melbourne, Bond University, Flinders University, The University of South Australia, St Andrew's College and many other institutions were present at the event. This variety of representatives enabled students to explore multiple options as they prepare for and complete SATAC and interstate tertiary study applications. A formal presentation by The University of South Australia, The University of Adelaide, TAFE and Flinders University provided useful information including key application dates and entry criteria for each institution. A big thanks to Ms Palmer for all her efforts in organising this successful event.

Year 10 Pathways Week

Eloise Broster and Fengfan Zhang share their Year 10 Pathways Week experience:

Year 10 Pathway Week for students occurred in Week 8 of Term 2. On Monday and Tuesday, students were lucky enough to visit Flinders University (both Bedford Park and Tonsley Campuses), UniSA (CityWest and CityEast campuses) and The University of Adelaide.

We learned about university life, sat in makeshift lectures, participated in workshops and were exposed to amazing resources and facilities that will assist us with our subject and course selection moving forward.

Students were able to experience the university landscape and found hearing about pathways after school to be enjoyable and interesting. For the following three days, students were involved in an industry immersion/work experience program in a broad range of work placements, gaining a deeper and more personal insight into the ins and outs of their chosen field and better navigating our career prospects. We are very grateful for the opportunities provided during the week.

Year 10 Work Experience

Elena Tsamaidis shares her experience at the Jam Factory:

I was fortunate enough to undertake my work experience at the Jam Factory in the Ceramics Department. I was able to interact with artists and obtain an appreciation for the various roles in a ceramics department, from Production Manager to Slip and Kiln Technician, Associates and Artists to Head of Ceramics Studio. I gained hands-on understanding of the importance of meticulous hand sanding to create a quality finish, sorting and storing of just fired products, loading products for internal transfer in readiness for sale and loading the kiln itself (now that was a real-life game of Tetris!).
In addition, I gained experience in throwing and trimming products, learning new skills from professionals in this area of art, how to price a product and an understanding of the costs apportioned to the process. A highlight was that I was able to attend a private viewing of the Waterhouse Exhibition at the SA Museum where Jam Factory artists’ work is exhibited.
The placement was one of the coolest things I have ever done. The staff were positively lovely, and I enjoyed spending time with and learning from them.

Fengfan Zhang was fortunate to spend time at a dermatology centre:

I was fortunate enough to undertake my work experience at Windsor Gardens Dermatology, under Dr Kyoko Shirato. The specialist practice was less than a 5-minute commute along Northeast Road (which my parents loved). I started work every morning at 8.00am and left at 5.00pm. My days were spent shadowing Dr Shirato, observing her work and asking questions. I was able to spend a day observing Dr Shirato perform skin surgery in theatre. I noted, with amazement, the elasticity of skin and the precision of Dr Shirato’s hands. The following two days, I sat in on patient consultations in Dr Shirato’s office. I really enjoyed the conversations with Dr Shirato, whether it be her personal journey to dermatology, her adorable puppy or how the job did not comprise much of pimple popping (as I had expected it to). Overall, the three days were very enjoyable and have refuelled my desire to pursue dermatology.

Meanwhile, Anna McAuliffe immersed herself in the law at Piper Alderman:

I was fortunate enough to complete my work experience program at Piper Alderman, a renowned commercial law firm extending from Adelaide to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane offices. I received a warm welcome into the workplace, attending an introductory morning tea, which gave me an excellent opportunity to meet many members of the office. Throughout my placement, I visited lawyers across all specialities to gain some insight to their work, which broadened my understanding of the operations of a law firm on a day-to-day basis. All the staff so generously spent their time speaking to me in between my completion of the work experience research activities, as well as a small research project. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Piper Alderman and was so grateful for the opportunity to explore this industry.

3-day July holiday program at Le Cordon Bleu, Adelaide

Local sweet maker extraordinaire and current Year 10 student, Demi Moutos, was accepted into the Le Cordon Bleu Holiday Program. She shares below her exciting experience:

I was fortunate to successfully secure the opportunity to attend Le Cordon Bleu Career Residential holiday program. I have always had a passion for learning about the art of both culinary and patisserie skills and have set up and run my own small baking business, where I bake and supply biscuits to a range of local shops. During the program, we were involved in interactive workshops, lectures, behind-the-scenes tours of 5-star hotels; had the opportunity to cook in the commercial kitchens and ate lots of fantastic food from different cuisines in a range of amazing restaurants where Le Cordon Bleu alumni now work, including SunnyBrae, CAROclub, Plus 82, EOS and ITL. It was inspiring to meet and collaborate with like-minded people. Meeting people who have succeeded within the hospitality industry made me very motivated to one day join them. Lastly, one of the entrepreneur lecturers said something that stuck with me: “Companies fail to create the future not because they fail to predict it, they fail to imagine it!” Students can contact Mrs Palmer for information on this amazing holiday program.
