Exeat Weekend
Year 9 Product Design – Jam Factory
Over two weeks, the Year 9 Product Design classes have been lucky enough to visit the Jam Factory. On the first visit, the girls made a dinner plate, a side plate and a bowl using hand-building techniques. They were also able to throw pots using the pottery wheels and listen to a ceramicist talk about their work and being an associate at The Jam Factory.
The following week the girls returned to glaze their plates and bowls, trim the pots made on the wheel and enjoy a guided tour. These pots will now be fired and returned to the students to be glazed at school.
UN Youth Evatt Competition
A group of Middle and Senior School students attended the Evatt Competition. Year 9 students Emily Nguyen and Shayla Retnaraja, have written the following reflection of the day:
The UN Youth Evatt Competition was a fabulous opportunity for both of us to extend abstract thinking to a variety of propositions, as we engaged in a series of political discussions, whilst taking the role of delegate for Norway. Throughout this experience, we interacted with students from different schools to debate real-world issues that broadened our knowledge of current problems facing society, whilst also provoking our deliberation, debating and problem-solving skills.
During the competition, we gave speeches to discuss our stance on issues and convince other delegates to side with us. We participated in an impromptu debate, where we had 10 minutes to familiarise ourselves with an article and to create a position on the given propositions.
This competition provided us with the opportunity to socialise with other like-minded students in a civilised manner. It allowed us to have a taste of how the real UN meetings work, which was quite intriguing. This competition has encouraged both of us to become more aware of global issues, as well as finding reasonable solutions that benefit all global parties. We strongly encourage other students to participate in this competition and we certainly look forward to participating next year!
Duke of Edinburgh – Service Opportunities
As part of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, students must volunteer and challenge themselves to be a responsible, caring member of the community. Year 9 Carob held a very successful hot chocolate and bake stall at lunchtime to raise funds to create care packs for foster carers. Year 9 Antholiza worked at Treasure Box Inc. packaging pre-loved baby and children’s goods to families in desperate need.
Year 9 French – Crêperie Paris Plage
The Year 9 French classes visited Crêperie Paris Plage this week. This excursion was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to taste French regional specialties and to use the French language in context when placing their order. Délicieux.
Subject Selection 2023
The Year 8s have met this week to begin the process of selecting their Year 9 subjects for 2023. Information has been sent to families and selections need to be entered online by Monday 22 August for Year 8 girls moving into Year 9 in 2023. Girls need to print their online forms and have them signed by their parents/caregivers before returning them to the Middle School Office.
Year 7 girls moving into Year 8 in 2023 will need to make decisions about the language they would like to continue to study. Information has been emailed to these girls and their families today.
