Middle School Social
The Middle School SRC held a very successful social, attended by students from Wilderness, Prince Alfred College and St Peter’s College. The theme of the evening was ‘Disco’ and the Gym looked amazing with the lights arranged by Mrs Candace Gwyther. The photobooth backdrop was generously set up and arranged by Mrs Juanita DeMaria, complete with disco balls. All proceeds will be donated to the Round Square Foundation to support their initiatives. Thank you to all the staff who attended the evening and made it possible to host the event.
A Celebration of Science
Dr Kristin Alford, futurist and Director of MOD., started Science Week celebrations in an assembly. For many people, thinking about the future can be challenging and even confronting. Using Kristin’s work, we asked Wilderness girls to consider the ‘Probable, Possible and Preferred Future’ and record their thinking on printed cards that were displayed in The Nucleus. We hope that girls will see that the future is only limited by their own imagination and that they have the power to shape it.
The Nucleus was also used as a gallery space during Science Week to showcase the many and varied entries girls had created for the Oliphant Science Awards. There were also activities run by the Science Department.
Bangarra Dance Company – Year 7 Excursion
Please enjoy this reflection written by Year 7 students Lucy Davis, Anya Chawla and Selin Cinar.
On Thursday 10 August, the Year 7 cohort attended the Yuldea performance by the Bangarra Dance Company at Her Majesty's Theatre. We were accompanied by Ms Vanessa Abela, Ms Anna Lenartowicz, Ms Cassie Pope, Ms Jessica Foster and Mr Jason Forrest. The Bangarra Dance group is a group of professional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers who have been telling their stories for over 35 years. The dance that we witnessed was about the atomic testing happening in Yuldea. The music, storytelling and passionate dancing portrayed what the Indigenous peoples of Australia went through. The emotions these people experienced were palpable in their strength; it demonstrated their frustration and sadness. The fact that the group was able to portray such emotions showed an incredibly high level of dedication and hard work that was put into the performance. All the Year 7s were captivated by the emotionally invested and passionate dancing shown by the performers throughout the production.
Football South Australia Cup Finals
Congratulations to Year 8 students Zara Rocca
and Liliana Tsonis, who won the Under 13 Cup and Under 15 Cup respectively with their teams playing for the Adelaide University Soccer Club.
SUBS in Schools Sponsor Breakfast
For the first time, sponsors of the SUBS in Schools teams were invited to a breakfast to thank them for their support and for the girls to showcase their projects before water trials and judging at the Royal Adelaide Show. The breakfast was an enjoyable and worthwhile event for all the students involved and the parents who were able to attend, as well as a great networking opportunity for the sponsors. Thank you to Miss Bethany Slaughter, Mr Davide Carapella and Mr Steve Ramsden for their assistance. Thank you to Mr Tom Keller and Mr Liam Sloan for coordinating the Sponsor Breakfast and the SUBS in Schools program.
Indigenous Literacy Day – Wednesday 6 September
Myarn Alden (Year 12) has designed an Indigenous Ribbon, using the same colours and symbols she used to create the beautiful Indigenous Round football guernsey. The ribbon will be sold to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Girls are encouraged to purchase a ribbon for $3.50 via Flexischools (Special Clothing or Hair Accessories tabs) and wear it to school during Week 7 to show support for Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday 6 September.
The Flexischools link will be available until the end of this term. Ribbons purchased during Week 7 can be collected from the Middle School office. Any ribbons purchased after Week 7 will need to be collected from the Uniform Shop, as per normal Uniform Shop purchases.
We encourage everyone to support this important cause and look forward to seeing these ribbons worn during Week 7.
Year 9 Antholiza Anglicare Project
This term, for Year 9 Antholiza’s Duke of Edinburgh project, we are working to support Anglicare in their work with young people who are aging out of the foster care system and moving into their own homes. Anglicare wants to stop these teenagers from becoming homeless after they leave the foster system. Did you know that 60% of homeless people between the age of 18 – 25 have been within out-of-home care, where many of them have experienced abuse, illness, family hardship or neglect?
As a Form, we have decided to take initiative and show our support for those who are transitioning out of foster care by creating a care package to help them settle into their own home. To help us put together great packages, we are seeking your help with donations that would be beneficial for 18-year-olds moving into a new home, focusing on kitchen and other home supplies.
Donations ideas include, but are not limited to the following.
Kitchen Items:
- bowls
- utensils
- spatulas
- egg flips.
Cleaning supplies:
- sprays
- tea towels
- sponges and cloths
- dishwashing liquid.
We have boxes to place these items in Dr Giles' office, the Nucleus and the ground floor of the library. All donations would be greatly appreciated and will go towards an important cause. Thank you.
Year 9 Antholiza Form
Inspired by the Jam
Please enjoy this reflection written by Year 9 student Kaylie Yen.
Our Inspire classes had the opportunity to visit the JamFactory, a not-for-profit organisation which has been honouring innovative craft for 50 years. The four studios in JamFactory are Ceramics, Glass, Furniture and Jewellery and Metal. In this experience, we were fortunate to work closely with the artists and staff in the Ceramics department to explore the factors that influence their artwork. The activities we participated in included ceramic workshops, going on a tour of their facilities and listening to Holly Phillipson (a ceramic artist and associate at JamFactory) speak about her artist journey and how JamFactory helped kickstart her career.
The extremely skilled staff at the JamFactory shared a wealth of knowledge with our girls in two very hands-on workshops this term. They were able to create work using a variety of hand building techniques and pottery wheels. They learned about how to decorate and finish their work for functional use, as well as aesthetically.
Students are now practising their skills and exploring these processes in the Art Centre. Next term, they will apply what they have learned to design and create sustainable products that serve a need or opportunity in society.
