Intercol Wrap Up
Last week saw us line up against Seymour College for our annual Winter Intercol. The week was contested in a great spirit and saw lots of close fixtures between the two schools. Seymour College finished the week as overall winners with 71 points to 53 points. We took home the trophies in Debating, Soccer and Football.
Debating
On Monday 21 August, the Wilderness Senior A debating team debated against Seymour College, opposing the topic ‘That in times of economic crisis, the government should withhold information that is likely to damage market confidence’. Following topic selection, the team had one hour to prepare a case to present, with Georgina Gross (Year 12) speaking first, Allegra Kleinig (Year 12) second, Devika Mukherjee (Year 12) third and Chenuli Basnayake (Year 12) in the prep room. In what was an intense and enjoyable debate, Wilderness secured a unanimous victory with all three adjudicators awarding the win by a margin of two points. - Devika Mukherjee (Year 12), Debating Captain
Hockey
The hockey Intercol games were tight contests with both the Senior A and Senior B games being decided by the slimmest margin of one goal. The Senior A girls were lucky enough to play under Monday night lights and had an amazing crowd, ensuring it was a great experience for the Year 12s to finish on. The close score margin in both fixtures is a testament to both of our hockey teams, who displayed their hard work and skills. - Jemima Langley (Year 12), Hockey Captain
Soccer
Soccer took centre stage on Wednesday night with all three Intercol fixtures being played at the Park Lands. In what was an intense soccer showdown for the Senior A side, scores were tied at nil all with seven minutes to go. The game kept fans on the edge of their seats as both teams battled it out. Sophie Zappia (Year 11) proved to be the difference, scoring late in the game, concluding a nail-biting match that went right down to the wire. We were lucky enough to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory. In the other two fixtures, our Division 1 team and Middle A teams had comfortable victories with 3-0 and 4-0 wins respectively. - Charlie Bower (Year 12), Soccer Captain
Football
Our Senior A Football game against Seymour went right down to the wire, but Wildy came away with the win by just three points for a final score of 35-32. The game was a rollercoaster of excitement, with both teams displaying exceptional determination. The low score of the game shows the intensity of the contest, as the lead changed hands multiple times and the outcome was in suspense until the very last moments. To come away with a win was thrilling for all the girls and left the Year 12s feeling fulfilled with their last ever Intercol game. Our other three teams unfortunately suffered defeat at the hands of Seymour, but all fixtures were played in great competitive spirit. - Charlie Bower (Year 12), Football Captain
Netball
Netball Intercol proved to be a tough challenge for all our netball teams across all grades. However, bringing our rich Wildy spirit, we fought hard throughout every fixture. Only a three-point difference throughout the first quarter of the Senior As’ match clearly demonstrated that we started strong with a positive mindset. Despite the loss to Seymour’s talented team, all Wilderness girls played exceptionally well, securing 32 goals on the board, and we considered it an accomplishment to have played such a great last game to be remembered. The shining light of the day was our Year 9A team, who had an impressive win over their rivals with the final score being 56-37. - Jess Truman and Stephanie Davidson (Year 12), Netball Co-Captains
Badminton
In an exciting display of sportsmanship and dedication, the Wilderness badminton teams showcased their remarkable skills at the highly anticipated Intercol game against Seymour College. The teamwork and effort displayed by every single girl showed their exceptional skills, which created an incredibly enriching and challenging competition. With the unwavering guidance and support of our peers and coaches, we were able to secure a solid overall win, with five of our seven participating teams winning. The incredibly close and intense set of games for the As had the girls, coaches and audience on the edge of their seats, despite the narrow loss. All the Wilderness badminton teams should be commended for their outstanding performance and hard work in this year’s Intercol competition. - Diya Gowda (Year 12), Badminton Captain
Congratulations to all the girls who took part in the week and a big thank you to all the staff and coaches who supported our teams throughout the week.
Soccer Grand Finals
At the end of the IGSSA Soccer season, two of our teams finished in the top two and made grand final appearances.
Our Division 1 team finished top of the table with an undefeated season of nine wins and one draw from their ten games. They faced off against Seymour College in the grand final with a result of 2-0, winning the Division 1 shield and capping off a great season.
Our Middle A team finished the regular season in second place and faced off against St Peter’s Girls School, in what was a fiercely contested game. Unfortunately, a single goal was all that separated the teams, with the final scoring being 1-0 to St Peter’s Girls School. The girls played their hearts out and the future is bright for soccer at Wilderness!
