My name is Myarn Alden. I am a Kija and Juru woman from Darwin.

I moved to Wilderness School at the beginning of last year to continue my education.

One of the many opportunities that have come my way since being in Adelaide is to be a part of the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy, SAASTA for short.

Being of Aboriginal descent, it is a great honour to represent my tribal groups, the Kija and Juru people.

As a young Aboriginal woman from the Kimberley region, I never thought I would be presented with such a great sports program. To be a part of the Soccer Academy, I had to try out last year and was then selected.

This program is very rewarding as I have made many connections with the other students.

I really enjoy communicating and spending time with other Aboriginal people, as I have learned about many different Aboriginal cultures over the last few weeks.

I have also shared my story and my culture with other people in the Wilderness community.

I am incredibly grateful that Wilderness has allowed me to have such a flexible SACE program to accommodate my participation in this course.

In the spirit of Summer Intercol

The number of vacant chairs around the dinner table indicated the boarders' tremendous commitment to the sporting teams and spectator support at our recent Intercol matches.

While the scoreboard didn't always go in our favour, this didn't dampen the spirit of participation and school pride.

The boarders were well represented in the many teams pitting themselves against their Seymour counterparts.

Birthday Tea Celebration

We transformed the boarders' dining room into a bush-like setting for a 'Glamping' themed birthday dinner celebration last Tuesday night.

After the restrictions of 2020, it was fabulous to see this old boarding tradition reinstated.

The cake was cleverly decorated to the theme by our catering team, and while we couldn’t blow out the candles, Happy Birthday and hip, hip hoorays were sung enthusiastically.

Cooking Class

The girls definitely looked the part in chef hats and aprons for their cooking class on Sunday morning.

Following the hot breakfast cooked by the Captains, many of the girls put their own culinary skills to the test.

They were lead through the preparation of a main meal and dessert.

What a fantastic job they did on a particularly delicious day enjoyed by all!
