Australian of the Year Luncheon 2024
In Week 8, the Middle School and Senior School SRC executive attended the Australian of the Year Luncheon at the Convention Centre. The event showcased distinguished Australians who inspired us to contribute to a better future for our nation. The luncheon featured pioneering melanoma researchers Professor Georgina Long AO and Professor Richard Scolyer AO, the 2024 Australian of the Year.
It also included panel discussions with environmental scientist and filmmaker Tim Jarvis AM, SA Australian of the Year; Sister of Mercy and social justice advocate Sister Meredith Evans, SA Senior Australian of the Year; climate change and sustainability expert Tiahni Adamson, SA Young Australian of the Year; and Rachael Zaltron OAM, founder of Backpacks 4 SA Kids and SA Local Hero.
Middle School Science
Year 8 students recently showcased their creativity and scientific knowledge by designing interactive games about the rock cycle. These games allowed players to explore geological processes in a fun and engaging way. The games demonstrated impressive creativity and originality, featuring interactive elements and beautiful designs. Clear instructions ensured everyone could participate, promoting teamwork and a deeper understanding of geology.
Our girls had a fantastic time playing the games their peers created. The smiles and excitement in the photos below highlight the joy and learning that took place. This project was a great success, showing our students' ability to blend fun with education. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and look forward to more innovative projects in the future.
Year 9 students recently embarked on an engaging journey into neuroscience with a sheep brain dissection. As part of their homeostasis unit, students eagerly labelled brain lobes, observed the spinal cord, and explored the brain's intricate structures.
Girls donned gloves and utilised scalpels responsibly, ensuring a hands-on learning experience with respect for ethical dissection practices. This session not only deepened their understanding of brain anatomy but also highlighted its crucial role in maintaining internal balance.
Student Success
Congratulations to Jessica Mah (Year 7) who won her heat recently for the Legacy Public Speaking Competition and will now progress to the State Final on August 16. She spoke about social justice, which is one of the Legacy ideals; and her impromptu topic was on 'what defines a hero.'
Please note, there will be an early closure of the Uniform Shop on Wednesday 31 July (Term 3 Week 2), closing at 4:30pm.
