As we transition from winter to spring, we have had an exceptionally busy and enriching few weeks in our ELC. The girls have been deeply engaged in a variety of activities that have not only been enjoyable but have also supported their learning in alignment with the principles, practices, and outcomes of Version 2 of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).

Mathematics Week: A Collaboration Across Year Levels
We commenced with Mathematics Week, where our Annie House girls had the opportunity to engage in active mathematics tasks alongside the Year 12 girls. This experience was a wonderful way for our younger learners to see the practical applications of mathematical concepts in a supportive and interactive environment. Through these activities, we have supported the EYLF's practice of promoting a sense of belonging and connection between different age groups, as well as fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Science Week: A Buzz of Excitement
Science Week followed, and it was nothing short of magical. One of the highlights was a visit from Mila's Auntie, Dr. Deb, a secondary school teacher and veterinarian from the UK. Dr. Deb's presentation on bees captivated the girls, particularly the fascinating story of the Queen bee and her dedicated female worker bees. The girls' amazement at these industrious insects was a perfect example of the EYLF principle of fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world.

To add to the excitement, the girls participated in several fun and educational experiments. They learned how to write up an experiment as a group, which not only enhanced their literacy and communication skills but also deepened their understanding of scientific inquiry.

Another thrilling discovery was the fact that our resident hens have started laying eggs! Watching the girls’ excitement as they discovered this was truly magical and perfectly aligned with the EYLF outcome of children developing a strong sense of identity and a connection with living things.

Book Week: A Celebration of Stories and Imagination
Next, we moved on to Book Week, an event that always sparks creativity and imagination. Prior to the official celebrations, our Annie House girls had the privilege of joining the reception classes for a workshop with South Australian artist, author, and illustrator Mandy Foot. The girls were inspired by Mandy’s work and created some impressive illustrations of their own. This experience fostered the EYLF practice of encouraging creativity and expression through the arts.

During Book Week, the girls were also treated to a live book reading by our very own Miss Tommie, who shared her book, Mr. Brown. Seemingly, there is not anything that Miss Tommie cannot do!

The Book Week parade was another highlight, where our girls proudly dressed up as their favourite book characters. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents for their efforts in preparing the costumes and organising the girls on the morning of the event. While we understand that participation can be daunting for some of our youngest, it was heartening to see their enthusiasm and courage as they took part in the Junior School parade. These activities helped to reinforce the EYLF outcomes of children feeling a sense of belonging and contributing confidently to group activities.

Looking Ahead: Father’s Day Breakfast
As we move forward, we are eagerly preparing for our Father’s Day Breakfast on Tuesday, 3rd September, from 8:15 am to 8:45 am. We look forward to welcoming our dads and sharing this special time with them.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in these activities. Together, we are creating a nurturing environment where our girls can explore, discover, and thrive.
