The Creative Industries is the home of Music, Drama, Multimedia and Art. In this edition, we introduce our Artist in Residence and celebrate the great success of our bands at the SA Jazz Festival. We also share a little flash-back film created by the Media Team that reminds us of the fun and success we had during Summer Intercol.

Art

Welcoming our Artist in Residence

Wilderness School has a successful annual Artist in Residence program, which began in 1989 in the Art Department.

In Weeks 5, 6 and 7 this term, we welcome Rosina Possingham as our Artist in Residence. Rosina is an emerging multi-disciplinary artist, designer and photographer who values collaborative environments where ideas and conceptual thinking are shared. Rosina’s exploration of technology in the visual arts has seen her abstract mapping and deconstructing imagery to create colourful, layered work, both in a physical and conceptual sense of the word.

She will be working with art students from Reception to Year 12 to foster appreciation, knowledge and understanding of visual arts, promoting the richness and value of contemporary art practice.

SA Schools Jazz Festival - Bands Success!

On Saturday 1 May, Big Band 1 and Big Band 2 competed in the SA Schools Jazz Festival, held at the University of Adelaide. This festival was organised as a replacement performance opportunity for South Australian school big bands, in lieu of the annual Generations in Jazz festival, which had unfortunately been cancelled for the second year running due to COVID-19.

Over 50 bands from 25 South Australian schools participated in the festival, and Wilderness finished the day with some fantastic results! Big Band 1, directed by Ms Cassie Pope, won first place with a Gold Award in Division 3 (out of 17 bands), and Big Band 2, directed by Mr Damien Hurn, also won first place with a Gold Award in Division 4 (out of 18 bands).

Cassie Pope joined us only at the commencement of this year and has done a tremendous job re-igniting the spirit of our premier band. Damien Hurn must also be acknowledged for the continuous joy he brings to our second Big Band, as well as the consistent results he achieves year to year.

Whilst our talented girls shone on stage with their musical talents, they also demonstrated remarkable Responsible Citizenship, assisting and supporting each other in the lead-up, and on the day as they had some band members away on REALISE camp. In particular, a mention must be given to Taylor Tran and Georgina Gross, who were tremendous in learning new music very quickly.

Congratulations to all the girls involved.

Festival of Strings

Mark the following date in your diary for our Festival of Strings on Monday 31 May. We are excited to have all strings ensembles, and selected soloists perform in Hender Hall at 6.00pm.

Please register your attendance prior to the event via Trybooking and check in using the QR code upon arrival.

Summer Intercol Film

Here is another little treat that comes from the great work of our Media Team. Last term, the girls went out and captured the Summer Intercol matches against Seymore College and put all the highlights together in the following film. We hope you enjoy it!
