Upcoming Learning Initiatives
Our Junior School staff work collaboratively and creatively to engage our students in quality learning experiences – both in the classroom and beyond. This term is shaping up to be filled with numerous learning opportunities. Let me share with you some of these…. All our girls undertook a consolidation “Friendology” session with Tyson Greenwood and his furry friend Oscar on Friday 26 August – role-playing a series of responses to ‘school scenarios’ and how to best manage their friendships and build strong relationships with their peers.
Our Reception girls had their special day celebrating “100 Days in Reception” on Wednesday 31 July; Year 1s have their Outdoor Education Winter Day Trip to Morialta in Week 5; Year 2s have their first overnight Outdoor Education activity on the Friday evening of either Week 4 or Week 5. Book Week is also in Week 5, with numerous activities, meeting with a visiting author and culminating in our Book Week Parade on Thursday 22 August in the School Gym 8.40 am. Our Year 6 girls have their Canberra Camp in Week 6. Our Year 5 girls have their Ballarat Camp in Week 9.
Our Year 6s perform their integrated Arts Curriculum Production “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in Week 10. Further our teachers have planned incursions and excursions across all year levels and quality learning is displayed in our recent Oliphant Science Award entries. Week 3 has seen us celebrate Mathematics Week. There is so much on offer to engage each and every girl. Have fun everyone. Learn lots. Ask lots of questions. Work collaboratively to discover more about the world around us and how we learn best.
Junior School Leadership Badge Assembly
On Thursday 1 August we inducted the following Year 6 students into their Semester 2 leadership roles. Special thanks to Mrs Belinda Arnfield, Sophia Tayeb (12 SRC President), Anna McAuliffe (12 SRC Vice-President) and Sophie Grice (12 SRC Secretary) for joining us to present each girl with their SRC Badge. As a community we congratulate these girls for nominating and successfully being elected to undertake these important roles. We sincerely wish them a rich learning experience.
The “Student Voice” and the development of leadership qualities in all our students in the Junior School is very important to me personally and to staff at Wilderness. I very much enjoyed sharing lunch with our new SRC Executive Wednesday 31 July in my office – getting to know each other and talking through strategies to support them as an Executive team. We meet fortnightly over lunch as an Executive team to plan and reflect on initiatives that strengthen Wilderness relationships as well as monitoring the overall wellbeing of our Junior School community.
I am so proud of all our girls inducted to their respective leadership roles for Semester 2. This team will provide such outstanding mentoring to their peers. In closing, let me share with you the summary from my address to our community in this Badge Assembly…. “So girls, as you commence your leadership of our Junior School this morning, embrace your new beginning. But remember the generations of girls who have come before you and the values you are called to embrace. In doing so, you bind together your foundations and your future and our Junior School community is just so excited to see all that you will achieve.” I would also like to pass on congratulations from our Head of Junior School, Mrs Liz McCarthy who looks forward to working closely with you too on her return to Wilderness.

Sun Protection Policy
Wilderness has updated its Sun Protection Policy. As part of this policy, sun hats are now required to be worn by ELC , Lower Junior and Junior School students in Terms 1, 3 and 4. As a result, the "No Hat, No Play" policy will come into effect immediately.
Please ensure your child has a named light blue sun hat to wear whilst at school.
‘100 Days of Reception’
On Wednesday, July 31st, Reception girls celebrated 100 Days of Big School. We had a fabulous day of 100 themed activities and even dressed up as 100 year old grannies. We predicted where 100 steps would take us, what we might buy with 100 dollars (perhaps a house with a swimming pool!) and Mrs. Keller even had some 100 themed activities for the girls’ PE lesson.
At the end of the day, we took home a beautiful ‘100’ biscuit. It was a special day celebrating 100 days of learning and friendship in Reception.
An important reminder that Monday 2 September, Show Day, is a pupil free day at Wilderness School.
Wilderness OSHC will be open 7am-6pm on Show Day for those who need it with special themed programming including our own yellow brick road and many fun activities.
Please book via the OSHC link; https://wildyoshc.fullybookedccms.com.au/family/login
Have a wonderful day everyone.
