This year, Friday 12 February, marked the Chinese New Year.
As the most significant celebration in Chinese culture, this festival is traditionally celebrated with a strong emphasis on family. As their Australian family, the boarders hosted a special Chinese New Year dinner on Wednesday night. They invited staff from the day school, and all the international students who live in a homestay arrangement to also attend.
Our international SRC Rep, Jenny Chung and our Connecting Leaders, Victoria Lane and Charlotte Linke, introduced the evening.
Jenny provided the historical background to the Chinese Lunar calendar as she acknowledged 2021 as the Year of the Ox, while Tori and Charlotte spoke of the importance of building connections across cultures.
We were also treated to a traditional song from Ella, Angela, May and Celine.
While not on the scale of those in China, we did have our own mini fireworks display as girls lit up sparklers on Memorial Lawn as the finale to the evening.
Our international students also enjoyed an extended New Year celebration with the support of Study Adelaide and some of our locally-based agents.
Study Adelaide hosted a lunch for international students studying in Adelaide at the Adelaide Convention Centre last weekend and AUG student recruitment agency hosted the girls at Nova Cinema last Wednesday evening as a special treat to welcome in the Year of the Ox.
